The Suffolk County, New York DMV's point system was significantly overhauled in November 2024, which means these new rules are in effect now, including, how points are assessed, penalties, and license suspensions. Some of the new changes include:
Suffolk County Alcohol and drug-related convictions: Drivers in Suffolk County convicted of DWI, DWAI, Aggravated DWI, or DWAI-Drugs will receive 11 points.
Aggravated Unlicensed Operation (AUO): Drivers in Suffolk County convicted of AUO will receive 11 points.
Passing a stopped school bus: Drivers who pass a stopped school bus in Suffolk County will receive 8 points.
Speeding in a construction zone: Drivers who speed in a construction zone will receive 8 points, regardless of the speed.
Leaving the scene of a crash with injuries: Drivers in Suffolk County who leave the scene of a crash with injuries will receive 5 points.
Look-back period in Suffolk County: The look-back period for the number of points that can lead to a license suspension has been expanded from 18 months to 24 months.
